The Shield of Courage: Standing Strong with a Brave Heart

Growing up is a beautiful adventure, but it can also bring moments of fear and uncertainty. Whether it is facing a difficult test at school, standing up to peer pressure, or simply feeling afraid of the dark, children encounter their own "giants" every day. This season at the Bethel Children’s Center, our Blooming Bethel spiritual program is introducing a deeply empowering theme to help our young ones navigate these challenges: The Shield of Courage.

We are teaching our children that true courage is not the absence of fear. Instead, courage is choosing to move forward and do what is right, knowing that God is walking right beside them. By building a "shield" of faith and bravery, they can learn to face life's obstacles with a confident and peaceful heart.

This Season's Core Lessons

To help our children discover their inner bravery, we are exploring three powerful biblical truths about courage:

1. Facing the Unknown (Remembering We Are Not Alone)

When children face a new situation—like moving to a new class or trying a new skill—it is easy to feel small and discouraged. We are reminding them that they are never alone. God’s presence is a constant comfort, giving them the strength to step into the unknown with their heads held high.

"Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go." > — Joshua 1:9 (NIV)

2. The Courage to Do What is Right (Standing Firm)

Sometimes, the hardest thing for a child to do is the right thing, especially if their friends are making wrong choices. We are teaching the children the importance of standing firm in their values. It takes immense bravery to be honest, to protect someone who is being bullied, or to say "no" to a bad idea. We guide them to find their strength in faith.

"Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong." > — 1 Corinthians 16:13 (NIV)

3. Overcoming Big Worries (Finding Our Safe Place)

Anxiety and worry can feel like a heavy dark cloud. We are helping the children understand that when they feel overwhelmed, they can look to God as their safe hiding place. When they realize that the Creator of the universe is protecting them, their earthly fears begin to lose their power.

"The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life—of whom shall I be afraid?" > — Psalm 27:1 (NIV)

Practical Daily Practices at the Center

To turn these lessons on bravery into everyday action, we have designed engaging, hands-on activities for the children at the center:

  • The "Brave Step" Board: In our main hallway, we have set up a special display board. Whenever a child takes a "brave step"—such as admitting a mistake, trying a difficult math problem, or befriending someone new—they get to write or draw it on a star and pin it to the board to celebrate their courage.
  • Creating the Shield of Faith: During our craft sessions, the children are designing and decorating their own personal cardboard shields. On the back of each shield, they write one of our core Bible verses to remind them of where their true protection comes from.
  • Courageous Story Time: Our evening gatherings now feature stories of great biblical heroes, like David facing Goliath or Daniel in the lions' den, as well as stories of modern-day everyday heroes. This helps the children see that bravery comes in all shapes and sizes.

By equipping our children with the Shield of Courage today, we are helping them build the confidence they need to become the resilient, principled leaders of tomorrow. We are so proud to watch them stand tall and face their futures with brave and joyful hearts.
