At Bethel Children’s Center (BCC), our mission of "Dependency to Dignity" doesn't just happen at a desk or a workbench. Sometimes, it happens in the soil of our community garden.
Lessons from the Earth
Gardening is more than just growing food; it is a masterclass in patience, nurturing, and stewardship. When a child at BCC plants a seed, they are learning a vital lesson: that with consistent care, effort, and protection, something small and vulnerable can grow into something strong and life-giving.
Why We Garden
Our gardening program in Avissawella serves three main purposes:
- Sustainability: Children learn how to grow their own nutritious food, a skill that provides lifelong food security and independence.
- Character Building: Watching a plant grow requires the same "Form and Flow" we teach in our workshops. It requires the discipline of daily watering and the patience to wait for the harvest.
- Community Health: The fresh produce grown here supports the nutritional needs of our students, ensuring they have the physical energy to learn and excel.
Planting the Seeds of Tomorrow
Every child we protect and educate is like a seedling in our garden. By providing the "Safe Harbor" of BCC—the right environment, the necessary tools, and the protection from external threats—we ensure they have the best possible chance to flourish.
When you support BCC, you aren't just giving a gift; you are planting a seed for a stronger, greener, and more dignified Sri Lanka.
