Shaping the Leaders of Tomorrow: The Journey of Bethel Children’s Center

For over thirteen years, a transformative initiative has been quietly anchoring the futures of children across Sri Lanka. Originally known as the "Bethel Children's Development Center," the project recently evolved into Bethel Children’s Center, launching a nationwide expansion on June 13, 2022, to reach more communities in need. Under the leadership of Chairperson Mrs. Chandralatha Hewa Palihakkara and a dedicated Board of Directors, the center is transitioning into a National NGO with support from key government secretariats in Colombo, Nuwara Eliya, and Trincomalee.

A Foundation of Love and Vision

The center operates under a powerful core identity: "Let us prepare children for success in life". This isn't just about academic achievements; it is a holistic approach to human development.

  • The Vision: To identify a child's unique skills from an early age while building a secure environment that allows them to achieve life goals through a strong, positive personality.
  • The Mission: To pave the way for spiritual and moral growth within a nurtured family setting. The goal is to produce "pioneers of altruistic thinking"—individuals who win at life and then use their success to bring light to others.

Holistic Objectives for a Safer Future

Bethel Children’s Center addresses the diverse challenges facing modern youth through several key pillars:

  • Protection and Safety: Dedicated programs work to free children from abuse and insecurity while preparing them to live within a legal framework.
  • Poverty and Self-Sufficiency: Beyond immediate relief, the center leads families toward becoming self-sufficient by advising parents on economic and mental development.
  • Skill Cultivation: Training is focused specifically on the unique abilities of each child to ensure they have the tools to succeed.

Impact in Action: Programs and Expansion

The program is already a vital part of the Seethawaka Divisional Secretariat, where it serves nearly 750 members across 15 Grama Niladhari divisions. The center's reach extends to Badulla, Nuwara Eliya, Puttalam, and Matale, with further expansion proposed for districts like Anuradhapura, Jaffna, and Galle.

Current activities provide a comprehensive support system:

  • Educational Excellence: Tuition classes are offered in Computer literacy, English, and Mathematics.
  • Health and Nutrition: The center provides dental clinics for children and health protection programs for parents, alongside mid-day meals for schools in low-income areas.
  • Community Philanthropy: Efforts include donating wheelchairs to those disabled by accidents and introducing home gardening programs to improve local food security.
  • Social Connection: Monthly birthday celebrations and annual field trips ensure that children experience the joy and social bonding essential for healthy development.

Through strong government collaboration and a heart for service, Bethel Children’s Center continues to prove that when children are grown with love, protection, and respect, they can truly illuminate the world.
