In a world that can sometimes feel shadowed by negativity or selfishness, teaching our children how to be a source of light is a profound gift. Through the Blooming Bethel spiritual program at Bethel Children’s Center, we are dedicating this season to a beautiful and transformative theme: The Light of Kindness. Just as a single candle can instantly illuminate a dark room, one small act of genuine kindness can completely change someone's day. We are guiding our children to understand that they hold the incredible power to bring warmth, hope, and joy to the people around them.
This Season's Core Lessons
To help the children understand the depth and importance of a kind heart, we are exploring three vital biblical principles:
1. Being a Beacon (Shining for Others)
We are teaching the children that their good actions are like a bright light on a high hill. When they choose to be kind, share what they have, or include a lonely friend in their games, they are shining brightly for everyone to see. This is not about showing off, but about reflecting God's love into the room so that others feel safe and valued.
"You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven." > — Matthew 5:14-16 (NIV)
2. The Warmth of Words (Speaking with Grace)
Words hold immense power. We are helping the children realize that what they say can either build someone up or tear them down. By actively choosing words of encouragement, saying a sincere "thank you," and speaking gently to one another, their words become a source of healing and happiness to those who hear them.
"Gracious words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones." > — Proverbs 16:24 (NIV)
3. Loving in Action (Beyond Just Words)
True kindness goes beyond simply saying nice things; it requires action. We encourage the children to look for practical, everyday ways to help out. Whether that means assisting a teacher, comforting a crying peer, or helping clean up the play area without being asked, they are learning that love is an action word.
"Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth." > — 1 John 3:18 (NIV)
Practical Daily Practices at the Center
To turn these beautiful scriptures into daily habits, we have introduced new interactive activities for the children at the center:
- The Kindness Lamp: A special decorative lamp in the main hall is turned on during our morning gatherings whenever a teacher or child shares a story about a specific act of kindness they witnessed that week.
- Encouragement Cards: Children are provided with craft supplies to create simple, colorful cards with uplifting drawings. They are encouraged to hand these out to center staff, friends, or family members to brighten their day.
- The "Helper's Hands" Challenge: A weekly initiative where children excitedly volunteer for small, practical tasks around the center, learning the deep joy and fulfillment of serving others through physical action.
By nurturing the light of kindness within our children today, we are helping to create a brighter, more compassionate tomorrow. We are so excited to watch these young hearts shine their beautiful light into the world.
